No Operating System Found

My laptop just started giving me the following error when its boots up

PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel Boot Agent
Operating System not found

its IBM ThinkPad X40

i checked online and it might be a hdd failure, but the damn thing shows up on BIOS. so im kinda stuck here.
Any suggestions.

also if anyone has a 1.8" IDE HDD for sale i might be interested

Thanks in advance

X40!

i know the 1.8" disks are a pain to find. I have been looking to converting my x40 to boot from CF, if i am sucessfull i might have a extra 1.8".

as for your hd, you could try booting off a linux live cd to take a peak at the disk, sometimes you get lucky and get files off before it goes completely. an x40 will boot of most usb-cd drives (or usb keys). the other thing you could try is to put the disk in an external usb enclosure. this is not as useful as the usb-ide bridge blocks some of the fun disk commands.
