I just preordered it yesterday for Tuesday from EB. I don't have easy access to Best Buy.

Has anyone played it yet? How good is it? I can't wait!!!!

rgroves@uoguelph.ca's picture

i haven't played it, but

i haven't played it, but it's getting amazing reviews. unfortunately, i'm not getting a copy until christmas. so hard waiting. i should find a way to freeze myself until christmas, then unfreeze myself when i get the game so i won't have to wait the next month and a half.

I got it from walmart on

I got it from walmart on launch day (walmart's stock system is top notch, and their games are usually a few $ cheaper, for those of you who are getting the eb shipment delay). I gotta say... I'm not a huge fan of the game (and apparently the only one who thinks so). It's amusing, but there is absolutely 0 storyline. It feels like a huge string of party games. But it's not like the mario games had much storyline to begin with, so if you are a mario fan then you'll probably love it :)

I second that.. I picked it

I second that.. I picked it up at Cambridge Microplay, relying on EB Games in Guelph is like.. uh.. relying on EB Games in Guelph.

Great game, controls are very simple -- pick up and play like original mario games. Extremely violent though. I just finished Manhunt 2, and the first 'galaxy' of this game made me more upset.

Awesome game, picked it up

Awesome game, picked it up last night and co-piloted for Tania most of the night. My advice to anyone out there, don't dismiss the multi-player, player 2 actually helps a lot more than you'd think. They're responsible for picking up star bits, pointing at things, stunning enemies, and if you're good and can time it with player 1, you can make mario jump really high to reach a few secrets.

You're right. Having

You're right. Having someone co-op with you makes the game a bit easier and more fun. I just wouldn't recommend it for the hardcore gamer that wants to do everything themselves.

This game is amazing. If you have a Wii, you NEED this game. Seriously. It's gotta be the best platformer since....ever. Most original premise that I can think of, too.

isn't the premise to save princess toadstool from bowser?
and to collect coins and stars along the way?
and to jump on goombas?

how is that premise original? :p

I had a great time with it!

I'm hoping to get some more play time in tonight, I had as much fun as player 2 as I did playing player 1. (I kept making Dave jump into sparks, which is tons of fun since I can't do that to him in real life). So my verdict so far, awesome! I love being upside down!

I'm somewhere around 35 stars and I believe Tania has around 25, so I guess combined we have 60, but we're playing seperate saves.

Annoying fact: your lives aren't saved when you save your game, just your stars and star-bits.

I miss the good ol days, when you were hard pressed to beat a game. Now, the only way to die is by gross negligence. "Yeah, I could heal... but I just won't."

It's funny because I was JUST thinking this. I've played both the new Zelda and Mario Galaxy now, and I feel like I want a Hard mode. It's not like they have the most surprising/shocking/compelling of storylines.

This is the reason I'm going to get the new Fire Emblem soon... I've heard the difficulty level is through the rough =P

As for Strikers... I was a fan of the game up until the highest difficulty level, where it just started to feel like I got penalized for things the computer did :P
I haven't tried the Wii version though.

Radiant Dawn is rough, it's true. I'm a little past half-way through on the Normal campaign and I have to say, it's noticeably harder than Path of Radiance was.

Sounds good to me. Might not combine well with my obsession of keeping every character alive forever though =P

Gamespot gave the game a fairly poor review, which surprised me. One of their bigger gripes was the story... what do you think of it? I'm considering buying the game, but sinec gameplay is similar to PoR and the story may suck, I'm hesitant..

I tend to agree with IGN's scores on games more than GameSpot's.

The story seems alright to me, but I can't say for certain because I'm not through the story yet. It seems to be building up to something, but maybe it will fizzle out in the end. While it's a bit frustrating for team building, I'm enjoying how I seem to be switching around to different factions a lot instead of simply playing as the Greil Mercenary group the entire game. I definitely miss the support conversations, while you get more info convos in this game they served to help flesh out the huge cast of characters (that's even bigger now). Overall, it's not a grounbreaking fantasy masterpiece, but I certainly don't feel it's terrible compared to PoR (Which GS seemed to like).

The gameplay is mostly like PoR with a few minor additions. There are different levels of terrain now, which affect accuracy, and change up how strategies for blocking/chocking enemies and assaulting fortified enemy positions. Armour and horses can't get up these at all. Combine it with a new light spell that actually makes a physical barrier for units and there's a bit more to using the landscape. Laguz have some improvements, they can now revert to non-animal whenever they want to try and conserve their transform gauge. Combined with the abundant supply of items to keep laguz transformed you laguz being more useable and the Heron clan being even more useful. Finally, there are third tier promotions for units now, so you hit a maximum level of 20/20/20.

The game is hard, I have to say. Hard mode for Japanese players is Normal mode on the North American releasee (and our Hard is their Maniac) so it's a noticeable step up from PoR. I never let anyone die either, and I've had to reset oh so many times by this point. Luckily there's that new feature where I can make a save mid-level, so it no longer involves starting an entire hour long map over and over. I usually use it to test out strategies on maps, but it could be used to save every turn (just don't save in a bad situation, or you won't be able to recover). Additionally, there are often multiple ways to win a map or things to do on a map as a sort of challenge. Some require you to defend for X turns, but killing the boss will both end it early and net you a good item. Or, there'll be a good item to steal or a house to visit or a chest to plunder that you might want to race to, but it makes the chapter a lot harder as a result. I failed trying to do this more than once so far.

Graphics are sub-par, as every review has noted, but it's not worse than PoR and I did notice the attack animations were improved. Armour and Halberdiers use shields instead of showing ridiculous agility in big armour, flying units don't charge forward on their dragon only to stop dead and poke a little bit anymore.

I recommend it if you're a fan of SRPGs or TBS games, and especially if you enjoyed Path of Radiance.

Awesome, thanks for the

Awesome, thanks for the review.
I usually use metacritic, but noticed that GS gave it a low score, so thought I'd ask.

I had never even heard of this series prior to PoR, which I loved... it seems to embody everything that Shining Force used to be back on the Genesis.

I'll probably pick this up along with the new Trauma Center in a couple of weeks =P

Then just Metroid Prime 3... and the list keeps growing. I'm holding my breath for a price drop, but I doubt it'll come before the holidays.

Anyone else notice the

Anyone else notice the positional warping they do? On numerous occasions I was just short of making a jump and Mario's position got lerped over a couple frames to the platform I was trying to land. It is mostly noticeable because his animations just don't match the movement. I determined it was an attempt to solve some of the wonky controls. IMO, they are the sloppiest of any 3D Mario game to date.

Thought I'd share this anomaly

One of the first times that I fought Bowser, he jumped (as he does usually to hit the glass spots) but somehow jumped at a certain angle that broke him free from gravity and ended up jumping off into infinity while screaming.

Now, my housemates were howling, but I was not impressed as it was a reset the system kind of situation.
