Especially if you're using a version older than 7.04, use aptitude instead of apt-get. It keeps track of dependancies so if you remove an app it will remove libraries that aren't needed as well. 7.04 I think was the first version to do the 'autoremove' command in apt-get.

I've run FileZilla on OS X and found it to be pretty ugly. I've found fuse or gnome/kde ioslaves to be just fine for FTP - why use a seperate client when it can just appear as a local drive?
