making a Lunix server

As some of you may ahve seen in the windows forum, im making my old desktop into a server, and i have been informed trhat i can sun a gaming server on it, i diddnt know that. SO it seems that Linux is the way to go. so does anyone know of any good tutorials to do that? (I'm looking at you, Monsiour Englert)

Depends on the games you
Depends on the games you want to run servers for, I used to run bnetd and jedi academy servers on my linux boxes. Back in the day actually, the CS Club used to have a dedicated gaming server for students on campus (due to resnet being stupidly crappy).
For a good start though, I'd look here:

You can skip over the portions you aren't likely to use (mail and dns for example), but its a good start. Also, just because its for 6.06 doesn't mean it can't work for 7.x, the files for the most part will be in the same location, just versions will be different.
Also, for reference, I'd print this off and keep it handy if you aren't familiar with linux at all:
