Cannot detect hard drives
Hey all,
I tried tossing an older hard drive into my new computer (it has my old windows partition on it, and another data partition) and my computer just went berzerk.
I plugged it into the second IDE slot, powered up, and attempted to set it as the slave drive, but it was not having it, and would not only not detect my primary hard drive, but wouldn't detect the added one either.
I think it might have something to do with the fact that on the old HD, one of the partitions is still set to be a boot partition, but still. The BIOS settings couldn't detect both hard drives if i have the new one plugged in, but will detect either one if i plug them in seperately.
should i find a way to make the other HD non-bootable? will that solve my problems?
Thanks,
- Jon

Are the jumpers correctly
Are the jumpers correctly set on the second HD? If the computer will boot when the old one is plugged in, it's likely set as a master, and is conflicting with the other master drive.

This should be more helpful
This should be more helpful than I can be. There's a "jumper settings database" link at the bottom too, so you'll likely have to check what settings you need for your specific brand/model. Those may be listed on your actual Hard Drive though, on a sticker on the top.
Good luck, and sorry about the delayed response.

No Worries!
you've been super helpful! there is a sticker on the top of the HD...I remember it now, and I'll check later. I just left the HD in my computer unplugged while I figure stuff out because I got tired of looking at it.
Thanks again!

Worked like a charm! Jumper
Worked like a charm!
Jumper sticker was located on the top of the HD, and when I plugged everything in, it all showed up fine. Took my XP install some time to get used to the new HDs, but everything is running smoothly and it all looks great.
Thanks again!
