RIM Co-op Opportunity: RIM Cellular Technologies

gbartnik@uoguelph.ca's picture

I'm looking for candidates to fill a Co-op position in Fall 2008. The position is a mix of software testing/development, technical writing, quality/process control and business administration.

You'd be joining the Engineering Software Tools (EST) team, which is part of RIM Cellular Technologies (RCT). RCT develops the firmware protocol stack that plays a large role in enabling a device to communicate with a cellular network. EST is primarily responsible for the development of software related to the calibration of all BlackBerry devices from a manufacturing perspective. We also develop a wide array of software applications that are utilized by various Engineering teams to debug/analyze RF alignment/performance.

The particular tasks you would be doing could vary depending upon interest, but a few of the key initiatives we want to accomplish are:
-Setup a nightly build solution (whether we build it in house or hook into another system @ RIM would be based upon your analysis!)
-Continue to expand the breadth of our software test procedures (both automated and manual)
-Document our software applications behaviour
-Devise methods for continual quality monitoring
-Develop software to facilitate integration-level testing of components.

The group consists of Electrical & Computer Engineers and Computer Science graduates. However, we are looking for someone with a keen interest in business administration and appreciation of process development and effectiveness measurement as well as a solid technical background. We have plenty of expensive hardware kicking around that you could very well get familiar with (training that is often difficult to come by elsewhere) and utilize a wide array of programming technologies and paradigms.

If you feel you meet this criteria and are interested in a 4,8,12 or 16 month position starting in Fall 2008, please send me your resume (gbartnik AT rim DOT com) and be sure to indicate your specific interests!

Really? Perhaps that is why

Really? Perhaps that is why we don't see many UG applications -- my group has already interviewed several candidates from other schools who all seemed to align in terms of Co-op postings...

Ahwell, wait and see I guess.

I'm not a Co-op student, but

I'm not a Co-op student, but maybe it's the school's fault, for not drilling it into the students' heads that they need to start looking for jobs 4 months in advance.

No kidding... I'm guessing

No kidding... I'm guessing it's probably because this website isn't super active during the summer.

It's the school's fault?

It's the University's responsibility to make you find a job? Maybe they should post reminders to do your homework. Or to show up for class everyday. Would you like them to dress you in the morning and tuck you in at night?

I agree with Brett, my reasoning is that the forums are fairly dead over the summer. But I think it's preposterous to blame the University. If you're co-op, it's your responsibility to find co-op placements, just as it's your responsibility to register for courses. We don't need more emails in our inboxes that the majority of people ignore anyway.

Not sure I quite understand

Not sure I quite understand the tone of the parent, but I think that is part of the mandate of the Co-op department, or atleast it was when I was there. Granted, if the student doesn't want to participate, it is not the Co-op departments job to 'convince' them or otherwise be forcefull.

In any case, the lack of responses to my post are most likely due to the low forum traffic in the summers...

posted with Coop department?

Brett and Grant,

You have posted these jobs with the coop folks too right?

That is the first place coop students will probably look for fall positions.
