CIS*4000 in F07 only now

WTF is that all about? talk about late notice. oh ya, it wont let alot of people register for it anyways.
this is stupid.
lets tell everyone last minute that a required course is only offered in the one semester, and then not let anyone register for it. ugh
keeps telling me that my prerequisits are in progess. since when is that a problem? assuming i pass the classes there should be no issue, just like how it always is.

I wish I could quit you.
NOT Impressed
I now have to drop a course that I had to go out of my way to get signed into and rearrange my entire schedule for next year. Thanks for the late notice CIS dept.

You should talk to Dr.
You should talk to Dr. Gardner (or ping him about this thread)... as he's the one who can look into this.

CIS*4000 only in Fall
Hi all -
I apologize for the disruption that this change has caused. First I should say that the entire motivation is cost savings. With the shrinking no. of students going thru the BComp pipeline at present, it was hard to justify offering 4000 two times/year given that the dept's budget (along with every dept's budget) is being cut by 4% each year. 4% doesn't sound like much, but when you consider that the lion's share goes to fixed salaries, the alternative to trimming course sections is cutting TAs. That's really the choice we're facing. Do people want to have fewer TAs to teach labs and mark assignments? Therefore, we are cutting corners wherever we can, until this multi-year phase of university budget cutting gives way to better times.
Enough about that. It is *NOT* our intention to delay anyone's graduation by this move. The BComp program counsellor, Greg Klotz, has instructions to help people with the following difficulties:
1) If you can't register in 4000 because your area-of-app courses are still in progress, he will sign a waiver for you to get into 4000 in F07.
2) If this change makes a complete mess of your final year, we are prepared to be flexible and let you substitute another 4000-level CIS course in lieu of 4000. You would need to make the case to Greg that it's messing up your life and not just a minor inconvenience. For example, if you are in BComp Honours or Coop A, F07 is normally your 7th semester, so you would have a more legitimate beef than, say, Coop B, who would expect to take 4000 in fall anyway.
BTW, even tho' WebAdvisor shows capacity of 30, we can take up to 60 without any difficulty.
It's been suggested that the students should be polled to find out whether it's ultimately better to run a once/year 4000 in fall (as we chose) or winter. I will pass this suggestion to the Undergrad Curriculum Committee.
If you have any questions or difficulties, don't hesitate to contact Greg or myself.
Bill Gardner,
Assoc. Chair
Thanks Bill
Hey Bill,
Thanks very much for explaining the justification behind this move.
I suppose perhaps next time this happens, the justification which you wrote could accompany the e-mail sent out to everyone. :)
Otherwise there really isn't a surprise when there is a strong reaction to a short e-mail simply saying that a course is being dropped from the schedule in the middle of course selection.
Thanks. :)

I agree. The email seemed to have a connotation of "we are changing this because we feel like it. deal with it." but now I see that is not the case. However, it is still rather annoying. Thanks though.
New Developments
Hey *,
Deb Stacey would like to know if there is enough of a demand for CIS*4000 in the WINTER semester. So if anyone is so inclined, send Deb an e-mail.
