Linux on an old PII, 320mb Ram
Hey all,
I have an old Micron Millenia XKU computer and I have been trying to remove WIN 95 and just make it a Linux computer. So far I took out the hard drive (8gb) and attached it to my laptop and reformatted the hard drive. I have also upgraded the Ram from 192mb to 320mb. It recognizes both the RAM and the HD in the Bios and I have run a memory check using the xubuntu cd and it passes.
I would like to install a Linux disto on the pc. My fist thought was Xubuntu. I have burned an alternate cd (edgy) and tried to boot from the cd. The initial menu loaded fine. The errors I have been getting are as follows and appear after I select the live cd option:
- (ACPI error) -> so I added the ACPI=off command and that error disappeared
- "invalid compressed format (err = 1)" (sometimes 2) -> any help about this error would be appreciated
I have burned the cd at 8x and checked the cd on another pc using the built in program on the cd.
Any help in this matter would be appreciated. Am I using the right distro for a PII? Is it the cd? Should I be adding additional boot options?
Thank you for any help,
Kyle

My guess is that the CDROM has issues. You could also try running memtest on the box to make sure the RAM is ok.

I have run memtest so it
I have run memtest so it must be the CDROM I guess. But when I put in a xubuntu cd, the menu loads giving me options. This would seem to indicate that the CDROM is ok.
Often errors in hardware
Often errors in hardware only show up when there is stress put on it, like doing the actual install or verifying the disc.
