Media Center alternative

Well, I've backed up all my data, and I'm making the final leap to a completely legal desktop. No illegal stuff whatsoever. No pirated software, music (although I'm told it's legal in Canada), nothing! I bought the external hard drive and have finally stored the last of my legal stuff on there. I'm about to do a complete repartition and reinstall of Windows - with space for Linux, of course.

I have one question though. Since I'll be leaving Media Center behind, and I don't want to put Vista on just yet, does anyone know of a (preferably freeware) piece of software that does the equivalent of what Media Center did for tv tuners... but well? I want PVR ability mainly, because the sub-par software that goes with my Hauppage Tv Tuner sucks, doesn't record video well (encoding blows), and has a high pitched whine when I watch tv.

Anyone know of a decent alternative? Fast forwarding, and rewinding live tv is not as necessary (although desired), it's mainly the encoding/recording live tv that I'm concentrating on.

He's looking for one in Windows. i've spent a large amount of time looking for one in Windows, and have had no luck at all.

edit: I don't know if it's any good, but I've found an open source PVR program called MediaPortal. If the program is as good as their website implies, it'll definitely be worth taking a look at.

I tried MediaPortal, and it was just one problem after another. Never ended up getting it to work, I just uninstalled. I'm back to using WinDVR

The one Dave is thinking of

The one Dave is thinking of is Freevo. It's awesome. No windows port though.

MythTV does have a Windows front end of some kind, so if you have a backend set up you could go that way.
