Let's All Play The Name Game

wcarss@uoguelph.ca's picture

This and this are lists of previous team names.

Some of these are awesome, and give their (sometimes poor standing) teams a lot of excellent nerd-cred. We want that kind of cred regardless of how well we do, so we want awesome names.

Generally speaking, this is a game of reference. Find a balance between obscurity, humor, and originality, then run with it. We need two names - one for a Learning Team and one for an Experienced Team. If you have a name specifically for one of those, post it and say which one. If you have a name for any team, that's cool too. What's absolute best though, is if you can come up with a pair of names that play off of each other and make a more complete and powerful reference.

Presently we have "The Guelph n00bs" (learning) and "The Guelph 1337" (experienced), and also, "The Black Knights" (learning) and "The Unladen Swallows" (experienced) as the leading two proposed name pairs.

Post and make us proud. We'll take the best we get and vote on them this Thursday, February 7th, at 5:30 - SOCIS' new meeting time.

UPDATE: The following names have risen to the top. A poll will soon be created.

Little Endians / Big Endians
There Will Be Cake / The Cake Is A Lie
Pound Bang Bash / The Forkers
Pinky / The Brain

For reference: last year we went with the Null Terminators and had a great time, people thought our name was fairly original too ;)

A few ideas

"The Flying Hellfish" (Experienced Team)
"Sherman's Army" (Learning Team)

"The Guardians" (Experienced Team)
"Phong's Acolytes" (Learning Team) (other Reboot references that don't suck like mine do would be cool)

"01011000 01001011 01000011 01000100" 0x58 0x4B 0x43 0x44 = XKCD (Experienced)
"01001000 01000101 01001100 01010000" 0x48 0x45 0x4C 0x50 = HELP (Learning)
.. Stuff in Binary would be cool, other suggestions welcome. 4 Characters is probably the limit of what we do in binary though. The Hex and alpha are there for our convenience, and are not part of the team's name. Also, I'm thinking we'd want to have acronyms for those, like "Extends Khan: Class Destructor" or "Hey Everyone, Let's Play!" - you get the gist.

Justin Arnott mentioned "Team Discovery Channel" to me, which I thought was riotous.

Keep in mind...

It's prolly best if we can tie it into the video, and the organizers have to be able to announce it.

For that reason, I'll support Starcraft names, since the videos could therefore be hilarious (animated within SC)

As a random note, I also really like Team Discovery Channel

Team Discovery Channel (Video could contain Martin Prince exclaiming "Team Discovery Channel!")
Team Planet Express

... and that's it. I had a lot more, but I guess I'll post them when I think of them.
