Ubuntu - Firefox

Is anybody having problems with Firefox running up massive amount of ram on Ubuntu? (For some reason not only does it cause FF to run up memory, but also XOrg.) And then slows down my system to a crawl due to swapping. I know Firefox has memory leaks--but it has never been this bad, and never this fast (usually within a day). Is this just a trend in FF 2.x? Or what? The worst part is that regardless of how I try to exit Firefox it seems to stay in memory until I kill it manually.

Google it

It's a common objection to the latest FF, but is easily solved in about:config. Specific instructions on how should be easy to google.

If you're a stickler for RAM

If you're a stickler for RAM usage, try using the Firefox 3 betas. I'm using Beta 3 right now, and with 7 tabs open (with a good blend of text, pictures, etc), it's using less than 50MB of RAM.

Of course, I've found Beta 3 to crash occasionally on certain sites, but all around a definite large improvement over 2.x. Rendering is nice and zippy, RAM usage is light, and it's well on track to reaching release status.

I'll second this. I've only

I'll second this. I've only run the nightlies on OS X, but the difference is ungodly awesome. I can now leave FF open for a week without it sucking up all my ram. It feels snappy, even with extensions like firebug loaded. I've also noticed a bunch of AJAX rendering bugs have been fixed (very noticable with CCS's zimbra pilot). At least on the OS X side, they've made a ton of small usability improvements. Just watch out if you use the DOM Inspector, a few days ago that was removed (as planned) from FF itself but the extension isn't quite working yet.
