Just came across this, figured I'd post it for the benefit of anyone trying to recompile kernels.
I've also used this method,
I've also used this method, which is "less debian" and "more ubuntu" in it's methods. This one is better if you're checking out the ubuntu sources directly, the other one is better for stock Linux kernels.
