Installing network drivers on a live USB Xubuntu
Hey SOCIS,
I've installed Xubuntu 8.04 on my usb key and I'm trying to run it on my eee pc 901.
Unfortunately for me, the drivers that are native to ubuntu only supports the 900 series down. So now I'm trying to find a way to install the drivers onto the usb key.
I've followed the guide from http://www.array.org/ubuntu/ to install the package, but I encountered an error when I try to install the .deb package. I don't remember the exact error, but it was something like /initr.....
So now, I don't know what to do.
Help.
Thanks.

If you could repeat the procedure and get the exact error, that would be useful...

Or, try using 8.10 since it
Or, try using 8.10 since it has an auto-usb-key wizard. It works really well, and might include the newer drivers you need.

I talked to Josh, he said that since I'm running it on a live USB as oppose to a HDD install, I need certain kernels that can't be installed on an usb.

If you re-install to your
If you re-install to your USB key as if it was a hard drive, you should be able to change the kernels. It looks like you have it set up in the same way as the wizard in 8.10, where the USB key is essentially a copy of the live CD. When you set it up, did you set up a read/write disk image or set your install to be read only?

perhaps a module is simpler
Is all that is needed from this new kernel wireless driver support? if so, perhaps building a module to load into the current kernel would be less disruptive.
EDIT:
http://kunin.wordpress.com/2008/07/05/asus-eee-pc-901/
has instructions on building the wired network module to load (no reboot required) i suspect the wireless module dose not require the reboot. also in the comments people have wireless working with ndiswrapper as an alternative.

Hey guys,
I've decided to change from xubuntu to ubuntu eee. It took me a while to figure out how to point the OS back towards to the usb drive (error 21) but now it works great.
Thanks for the ideas and help.
