Hey all.. I'd post this in the other section but barely anybody checks there.
Currently, I'm dual booting Vista and Windows 7 on a single drive. Every time I put in either the 9.04 or 8.10 desktop version of Linux, I wait wait wait, then get stuck at the BusyBox shell.
I get to the load screen, with the graphics, that gives me the options to install, check cd for errors, run live, but all of the options drop me to the busybox shell.
Any ideas? I've tried searching but haven't found a working solution.
Thanks!
Try running in rescue mode,
Try running in rescue mode, and ensure that 'quiet' and 'spash' aren't in the boot arguments. Hopefully that will tell you what it's hanging on. It sounds like it's having trouble reading the CD. It should boot without caring what the status of your HD is.

Thanks for your reply,
Thanks for your reply, Andrew. Apparently, just before I get the BusyBox dead-end prompt, I get the following failures:
Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 0
Buffer I/O error on device sr0, logical block 0
And then the prompt. What is sr0? Disk drive? Any ideas how I might resolve this?
Thanks again,
Tom

The trouble with computers is that they do what you tell them, not what you want.
sr0 is likely your DVD drive
sr0 is likely your DVD drive (sr* is for SATA optical drives I think). That either means that the CD or the drive is bad. It's probably dropping to busybox because it can't mount the root image from the CD.

That's upsetting. Can I USB
That's upsetting. Can I USB this thang?
I have a feeling installing / booting Linux via USB will cause gray hairs from both time and stress.

As long as your motherboard
As long as your motherboard supports USB booting, it should be fine.

Got it going.
Fixed: That whole "burn at 4X" isn't a myth. Now it's just a matter of fighting with drivers!
For posterity: I installed Ubuntu, but GRUB screwed my Windows 7 loader, even though it appeared in the boot list. I put in the Windows 7 install disk, chose the repair option and rebooted into Grub. Success!
