2009-2010 Special Topic Seminars

As everyone who has been to a meeting knows, I'll be running an on-going series of seminars this semester and next.
Topics that will be covered will be extensions of course content, new material that isn't offered through the curriculum, or general knowledge that will be useful to everyone.
We're starting with a Linux Intro on Sept 24th at 7pm in Reynolds 010/011 [the basement].
Following that, topics and dates have not been finalized, but a number of ideas so far include:
- Intro to OS X [and getting started with Xcode for dev]
- Ruby on Rails
- Processing [processing.org <- check it out! This will be one of my seminars]
- Perl
- SVN and/or GIT
- VPNs
- command line scripting
- POINTERS!! [believe me, you'll need this if you're in 1st year, and probably a refresher for 2nd year]
- Wireless security
- Hackintosh installs
- game programming
This is an ambitious project as I want to have a seminar happen every other week.
As for the format of seminars, I'm working to have a focus on Peer led [that means you, your friends, other exec] sessions, but hope to involve faculty and people from outside the university. Your time commitment would be an hour or so to keep it short and sweet.
If you're running more of a demo, then the whole time would be yours [keep us interested]; if you're running a tutorial, you'll have 20-40 minutes to give everyone some basic skills then another 20-40 minutes to create a project right there and then.
As dates and seminar topics become open, I'll post to the front page, let everyone at the meetings know, and have class reps spread the word.
Post here to give me ideas, sign up for topics, and ask any questions.
Also, shoot me an email, vp@socis.ca, and we'll work it out.

Processing looked really
Processing looked really cool. Especially the portfolio that they have. All of the applications in their (especially the mud tub), seems awesome. Pointers would be especially helpful to me, I'd also be interested in Hackintosh installs, game programming (may be over my head), VPNs, Perl, Command Line Scripting... heck everything.
I can't think of many other ideas quite yet though, but I'll letcha know if I do.
Good idea though, having these seminars, and i appreciate the effort.
