Paintball
Friday, October 23, 2009
Mountain underpass
Price: $5 admission, $25 for 500 paintballs.
People, it's that time of year again when our clothes are too clean and our trigger fingers are itchy. That's right! It's paintball season. We're headed off to The Paintball Arena in Kitchener for a night of Speedball, Zombies, and Capture-the-Flag. Meet us at Mountain underpass at 7pm on October 23rd and we'll bus over to Kitchener.
Admission and equipment rental is $5, and 500 balls are $25. SOCIS will make a bulk purchase of balls so that everyone has some to start, but bring some cash in case you get trigger happy. And if you have your own gun, bring it along.
Hope to see everyone there!

Trick or Eat
The annual Trick or Eat is fast approaching again!
“Only on one night a year do households expect their dinner hour to be interrupted in order to distribute free and edible items to all who ask. Trick or Eat puts a new spin on Halloween as costumed youth canvass their neighbourhoods collecting food for local social service agencies. At the same time, students raise awareness about local hunger and volunteer opportunities that allow their neighbours to get involved in addressing hunger.”
* Meal Exchange
Stayed tuned on news regarding this from SOCIS closer to the end of the month.

Special Interest Seminars
Oct. 21
7:00 pm
Reynolds building Room 008 [Mac lab across from the lounge]
Topic: Get to know OS X — It's not as scary as you think
[forum post: Get to know OS X]
This month and next, SOCIS will continue to run CIS-related seminars. These are student-led topics to introduce or re-acquaint you with various technologies that can make your life in CIS much easier. This seminar is intended for beginners and intermediate users of OS X, but anyone who isn't a power user will come away with at least something new.
Get to know the desktop and OS, command line access, network settings, disk image management, and for the coders, an overview of writing, compiling, and running C and JAVA programs in OS X.
We'll also show how to create a project in Xcode [An IDE provided by Apple; sort of like Eclipse].
Future dates are Oct 28, Nov 11, and Nov 25, topics to be announced.
For more details, or if you want to contribute by presenting at a future event, please contact Chad Chabot at vice@socis.ca.
