Hey im in South Res Mountain hall, and im trying to set up a file sharing network between my roomates and I. It seems as tho every 2 rooms in an alcove, ( of 6 rooms) are on their own separate networks.
So if the alcove contained rooms 1-6, 1 and 2 would be on their own, 3 and 4 would be on their own, and 5 and 6 would be on their own.
Right now were using windows 7's home group feature, which is nice, but 5/6 people cant see my computer, and i cant see theirs.
Whats would be an alternative? I've been pondering if Hamachi would work?
Also i do frequent newsgrouping here in res, seems im capped at about 170kbs. Anything i can do about this?
Alternatives
A wireless router would be the easiest, although I don't think the admin takes kindly to it. Don't bother running wires from one room to another, even if you tape it down along the baseboards, they'll cut it (I speak from experience).
Only other thing I can think of is to run the cabling outside the rooms, along the windows.
It's been forever and a day since I was in rez, but when I was there, UWGoLAN was how everyone file shared without killing bandwidth. I've heard it doesn't work anymore, but who knows? And if I'm not mistaken, it's not every 2 rooms. The cabling travels vertically, so the people above you, and below you, in the entire tower will see your network.
HINT: This is also true of coax cable...

Do you still get public
Do you still get public IP's? They used to be fairly static, and you could just connect with smb://[IP]/sharename.

DynDNS
DynDNS would come in handy if that's the case.
