Paintball

Friday, January 29th

7:00 PM SHARP
Mountain Underpass (South Residence)

Round two. Fight! After last semester's epic success, this year's second paintball event is coming up this Friday, January 29th. It’s a perfect opportunity to shoot your friends and admission is only $10. Bring extra money for more ammunition if you’re trigger happy.

Budget

Thursday, January 28th
5:30 PM
Reynolds 219

We have your money, come help us spend it!

Every year, SOCIS receives approximately $6.00 from every computer science student. We use this money to run our services to students, and to run events. If there is any event or service that you feel SOCIS should be offering, come on out and let us know what it is. We are always looking for YOUR new ideas.
On Thursday, January 28th, SOCIS will be having a meeting where we decide our costs for the semester. Come on out and tell us how we should be spending YOUR money! If you can’t make it, email us at exec@socis.ca with your suggestions, and they’ll definitely be considered.

CS Games

Everyone is invited to apply for CS Games, an annual computer science competition with participants from all across the continent. The competition takes place this year in Montreal from March 5th-7th. Space is limited, so email us now!

The approximate cost of the entire event is $200.00 and the Computer Science department will subsidize that amount if your overall average in CIS is greater than 70% or if you have over 90% in CIS1500, provided that it is the only CIS course that you have taken. As well, SOCIS will provide funding for students who do not meet the department requirement so that the full cost is not necessarily required. We are requesting a $20.00 non-refundable deposit to ensure commitment from those people that demonstrate interest in attending. The deposit is due (at the latest) this Thursday, January 28th and you can pay it to any of the SOCIS executive during the day or at the meeting on Thursday.

For more information, come to the CS Games meeting on Thursday, January 28th in Reynolds 219 and visit www.csgames.org or the information on our website. If you are interested, e-mail exec@socis.ca with your name, year, CIS average (whether it's above 70%) and anyone who you want on your team.

Don't forget about the basic services that SOCIS provides for you such as the cheapest pop on campus ($0.50), $1.00 chocolate bars, free printing, and comfy place to socialize with fellow CIS students (Reynolds Room 010/011). If you haven't already, come find us in the basement of the Reynolds building!

But wait! There’s more! The SOCIS lounge has recently been remodeled, and we are inviting all of you to come out and enjoy the newly arranged lounge. There is now more room for socializing and this is a perfect opportunity to meet new people in Computer Science. We are also using the OTHER door, so don't be confused when you walk into the basement.

Thank you very much for reading the second SOCIS newsletter for the month and we hope to see you in the lounge and at our future events!

Regards,
SOCIS Executive Team
