CS Games Prep Session - C++ - Scheduling

atrembla@uoguelph.ca's picture

Okay, we need to schedule the training session for CS Games, Mike I'd like you to post at least 3 times you are available to run this session, and then everyone else, you post which times work for you and which don't.

My availability this week

My availability this week sucks.

The only time I can be available is my original time on Wendesday, as orginally planned. I'll still be in Guelph at that time..

Next week I can do a session in the afternoons (Anytime between 3-9pm) on the 17th and 18th

I can also do a session that weekend *(Saturday Feb 20?)

The next week after that is reading week I think. Just a normal week for me ;) my availability is about the same, on the 24th or 25th between 3-9pm.

I have an alternative suggestion; I am more then willing to do something on a projector-type settings online. If we can arrange to set it up on the third floor of Reynolds, it would be easy to get a real USB microphone and I can share my screen to demonstrate etc. My availability from Toronto is a lot higher since I don't have to drive out and back, and can do it from work if need be.

I really want to do more then just discuss C++. I want to look at some of the other required languages like PHP, HTML, javascript and C, and show off some of the awesomesauce that is Python; explain extreme programming (I thought I saw that in the task list?) and whatever else people had questions about.

Let's open up the discussion to those participating and see what's convenient, otherwise I"ll just pick a time next week and whoever can come will benefit.

I think that since you don't

I think that since you don't really have any other times available this week we should still run a session this Wednesday, but maybe make it about something other than C++, something from the list of other things you wanted to discuss. Then we could schedule another session for the 18th on C++.

Also, I think we should all keep in mind that as long as you get at least 2 of your team members to attend a session they will be able to bring knowledge back to the other members or at least attend the competitions where what they learned is necessary. I don't think it is reasonable for us to try and push this off until all 20-25 of us can be there.

In terms of what we want to learn I think web languages are very important, and python would be awesome if there are competitions where we get to choose our own language or, even better, if a competition uses python.

But really, I want to see what everyone else thinks too.

Below is an email that I

Below is an email that I sent to Ali's list of participants.

Hello everyone,

I am going to host a session at 4pm tomorrow (Wednesday feb 10) on a couple topics I think will be of interest. The session will take place in Reynolds 312 (The meeting room on the third floor of the reynolds building, across from the ICC lab). After reviewing the competitions for the CS games (http://socis.ca/node/2171), I wanted to spend some time going over topics (unrelated to C++) that will definetely be of use.

My goal is to give you guys some exposure to these topics, and answer any questions.

- Debugging. What it is. How to do it. This is just plain useful stuff, and one of the challenges is directly related.
- GDB. This is the GNU Debugger. Almost all the GNU tool debuggers I'm aware of use GDB. It's also recommended material for a challenge at CS games.
- Extreme programming. This is another skill each team will be using. I'll go over the concepts.
- Python. This is my *favorite* programming language right now.
- Intro to PHP. This is useful for the web design challenge.

I may do a bit of javascript if there is time, but it is pretty easy to look up. Same with HTML.

If there is another topic you'd like me to cover, please shoot me an email.

I'll also answer *any* questions relating to pretty much anything that we might encounter at the CS games or explanations of concepts.

I encourage everyone who is attending the CS games in March to try and attend this session tomorrow, although it is not mandatory.

See you all tomorrow,

Hey CS Gamers,

Mike has posted his times, I'd like everyone who wants to have a say in scheduling to go and post on which of the options he presented works best for you.

I'm still working on my list of you all as well so if I missed anyone let me know and forward this to them please.

How long do you expect the session to run, Mike? There's a 3760 lab that goes until 17:20 but if you think you'll still be going after that I'll come join the session when the lab is done.

I would expect in the 1.5 to 2 hour range, depending on what the interest is in the material for those that come. I'll still be around at 5:30 more than likely if I'm not the only one there.
