On March 24, 2010, Justice O’Connor of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice ordered a referendum be held on the question of the CSA’s continued membership in the Canadian Federation of Students and Canadian Federation of Students-Ontario (CFS and CFS-O). This referendum was to be held on April 7, 8, and 9, 2010.

On March 28, 2010, The Honourable James B. Chadwick, Q.C. ordered that the online voting system, presently available at the University of Guelph should be used to conduct the Referendum.

On April 7, 8, & 9, 2010, the University conducted the Referendum using its online polling system. The University has issued a report containing the results of the Referendum. A summary of the Referendum results as tabulated by the University’s online voting system is as follows:

Now we can see whether the

Now we can see whether the CFS [whose aims I actually support, as do most of us, I believe] will amend their bylaws and embrace the democratic process, rather than suing their members.

I hope this doesn't prove to be a pyrrhic victory for students, and that our culture of student activism and involvement will continue. Whether that future lies with another student union, or ultimately back with the CFS [pending some serious changes], I look forward to seeing.

Also, while I am pleased with the results, we should not be thinking "Woot! $14 for beer!"

I hope all of you remain engaged and active, because a "No" vote isn't the end of this journey.
