Expansion

I've been wondering the feasibility of this.
Since everyone on campus is capable of logging in to this site and posting messages...
And since at this exact moment in time the student population at large does not have a forum...
Why not adverstise this sites existence to the student body?
Why?
For example: Most of us (I hope) are voting this week in the CSA election. But do we REALLY know these candidates? The population at large would have the chance to ask them questions without having to make an appointment etc...
Another example: Most threads on this forum revolve around CIS issues. Which is fine and great, but I find alot of the time...boring.
Yes, I DO appreciate the random links that get posted. But I think that with a wider audience from different programs etc..more intellectually engaging threads would develop. As a follow up to that point, many of us are BComp (not me, but many of us). And so networking with others from our respective areas of application could not possibly be a bad thing.
Conclusion: All that really needs to be done is to place an advertisement in next years daytimer or a small handout that can be distributed along with bus passes.
I have no clue as to the issues that would go along with this, but I think that it is nonetheless a good idea.

moderating it would be a
moderating it would be a daunting task, enforcing the Acceptable Use Policy / University guidelines. there might also be some scaling/technical limitations
There is sort of a forum in the works alongside the university portal
https://forums.ccs.uoguelph.ca/
politically, i think it has a better chance of being the 'u of g forums'
but yes, this is definitely a service that should be in the works looking ahead
crazy moderation would be a
crazy moderation would be a pain. But then I think of something like Facebook which is basically moderated on a per complaint basis...and it seems to work fine.
Not in favour of
I don't use this site because I'm a forum-type of person. I don't really have time for forums and all too often I find they (all forums in general) get bloated with dumb arguments and topics no one cares about. This became true with the forums of yester-year from the old csc website. I haven't seen much to complain about on this new socis website, mostly I believe because people are forced to post without anonymity.
If we expanded the forum's appeal to beyond the CIS population, there would be more of what I don't want and less of what I do want. I want to read about subjects and topics happening in my courses and in my program. When CIS*4000(W08) was cancelled, I came here to see what was up and I soon got an answer.
It is my opinion that SOCIS' forums should remain an apolitical meeting ground for CIS students working on their studies. Boring maybe, but I don't come here to be entertained - not that I object to the off-topic posts.

as bad as it is I beleve the new portal has a forum bult in. as far as socis running a service for the whole univeristy, socis is for providing services for CIS students. The CSA runs a drupal system and could add forum capability to there site.

Unfortunetely, I highly doubt that the CSA would ever do that.
If there is anywhere on campus that it would ever happen, it would be here.
I REALLY don't see the problem with at least putting a free ad in next years Daytimer just to at least give 1st year CS students info. Or just random people, one of the problems with the university is communicating the existence of its many services that many people don't know about. So if someone outside of CS would find this site useful to themselves; then why should they be denied that?
This is probably what it
This is probably what it comes down to:
The website and the forums are run on a server, and the components of that server were payed for by the student fees of CIS students, and money granted by the department. If you are not a CIS student or staff, then you have not contributed financially to these forums. I think the idea is to offer this service to the people who have contributed to its existance.
If a non-CIS student has business on CIS forums, then I would hope SOCIS would not object.

That makes sense. So should
That makes sense.
So should we be asking the engineers to kindly leave? Obv jk, they the feed farmers.
Not the issue
Engineers pay fees to CPESSC. Although ENGSOC gets back 80% of those fees, engineering fees do contribute to SOCIS.
However, let us not please turn the argument towards policing the forums to keep people out who "haven't paid". The original question was regarding whether or not these forums should cater to other programs.
Our forums are public to all, but they are designed for CIS students. By the same token, I completely agree with this suggestion:
"I REALLY don't see the problem with at least putting a free ad in next years Daytimer just to at least give 1st year CS students info." - gardinem
Open for all, but directed towards a CIS audience.

Computer Engineers do indeed have business on these forums.

Me thinks the Cannon.ca
Me thinks the Cannon.ca should run a vB forum. I'm sure there would be plenty of volunteers to mod.

Boo...
I say boo to that, the servers it is currently on barely handle the september / january rushes, not to mention that the cannon already pushes upwards of 60gigs of bandwidth a month (the company I work for built and hosts the cannon).

With that much traffic it
With that much traffic it would be easy to pull a profit with well designed and thoughtfully placed ads. I guess that's a whole other issue though -- but if the Cannon could be self-sustaining... just less fees for me.

Actually, it's something
Actually, it's something that we've been looking into since before this thread was started. We're still in the planning phases looking a farily wide range of possibilites, ranging from CSA/Executive blogs with comments to full-on forums.
I can't speak as to what happens past May 1st (that's when my position ends), but we're hoping to have most of the framework for whatever we decide done within the next 2-3 weeks.
