Course Conflicts!

Why are CIS*4730 (Pattern Recognition) and CIS*4800 (Computer Graphics) offered at the same time?! These courses are only offered in the winter of even numbered years so it's now or never for almost all of us and yet they offer them both at the same time... not great planning? Do I really have to choose between them?

If this is how its going to

If this is how its going to be, does anyone have any opinions of these 2 courses?

4730 vs. 4800

Yes, it seems these two courses have been scheduled at the same time.
Somehow it seems this slipped through the system. We're looking into it.

Michael.

I'd suggest emailing the Undergraduate chair (Michael Wirth, I think) and asking. If there's anything they can do about it, feedback is better earlier rather than later.

CIS*4650

Would it be possible to move CIS*4650 provided everyone in the class agreed? I doubt this will happen, I am just wondering since this course seems to have eluded my grasp for a number of years now due to one reason or another (the most recent of which being a result of a lack of interest...)

On a completely unrelated note, does the department have any idea who will be teaching it? A sessional (McCaughan maybe? -- since he did 3650 awhile ago...) or an as of yet undetermined faculty member?

The lack of interest might

The lack of interest might be due to the fact that 3650 made people want to kill themselves.

As much as I did in fact learn from 3650, I can't see myself using said knowledge for a practical use.

Really? I've used lex and yacc a few times in real world apps for parsing input, and it's saved me a lot of time and bugs compared to doing it manually.

Status update?

What is the status of CIS*4730 (Pattern Recognition) and CIS*4800 (Computer Graphics) changing to being held at different times. I would like to take both as well. Could we please get an update so we know if we need to select another course.

Thanks

Course conflict

Unfortunately, at this time, 4730 and 4800 will not be offered in separate time slots.

Sorry guys...

Disillusioned

Wow... CIS really dropped the ball this time. I must say that I'm surprised that this a) happened and b) won't be corrected.

Thanks for your efforts though, Michael - undoubtedly there are factors preventing the correction of this problem that are beyond your control... However, I'm sure some of us would like to know what those factors are such that we may all make sure that this doesn't happen again.

I agree with wow. These are

I agree with wow. These are courses offered only in even numbered years in the winter semester. Basically making it impossible to take both courses. I was interested in taking both. Horrible planning.

A similar situation is

A similar situation is unfolding with CIS*4650 - This course will have been cancelled twice due to lack of interest. Non-compulsory courses sometimes fall victim to this type of thing. Granted, in the case of the classes mentioned in this thread, the mutually exclusive enrollment is a result of an oversight versus lack of interest. But still, haven't we all had to make those tough decisions at one time or another regarding conflicting courses? That being said, I doubt any of those decisions were motivated by a scheduling conflict quite like the one described above, but still, these things happen.
